Remembrance Day: A Time to Honor and Remember

A yearly memorial day observed in many Commonwealth countries

Passed by the House of Commons the bill also changed the name to Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is a yearly memorial day that is observed in many Commonwealth countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. It is held on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, and commemorates the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in times of war and conflict.

The day was first established in 1919, and was originally known as Armistice Day, in remembrance of the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. In 1931, the House of Commons of Canada passed a bill that changed the name to Remembrance Day, and extended the commemoration to include all members of the armed forces who had died in service to their country.

Since the induction of Newfoundland into Canada in 1949, Memorial Day has been amalgamated to commemorate the Newfoundland Regiment's role in the First World War. Remembrance Day is a day to honor and remember the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, and to ensure that their memory lives on.
