33 earthquakes in the past 7 days, 205 in the past 30

Japan has been hit by a series of earthquakes in the past 24 hours, including three with a magnitude of M5 or greater. The largest earthquake, with a magnitude of M7.6, struck the Noto peninsula at around 4:10pm local time on 1 January 2024.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a major tsunami warning for large parts of Japan's western coast, from Hokkaido to Nagasaki Prefectures. The agency initially issued a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific coast of Japan, but later downgraded the warning for the eastern coast.

The JMA has warned that more earthquakes could follow in the coming days and weeks. The agency has also urged people to evacuate to higher ground and to stay away from the coast.

Evacuations underway

Evacuations are currently underway in the affected areas. The JMA has advised people to evacuate to higher ground and to stay away from the coast.

The government has also set up a task force to coordinate the response to the earthquakes and tsunami.
