Magnitude 7.2 Tremors Ravage the Region
Widespread Damage, Injuries, and Power Outages Reported
A major earthquake struck Central California on Saturday morning, sending powerful tremors through the region and causing widespread damage and injuries. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter of the quake was located near the town of Parkfield, California, and had a preliminary magnitude of 7.2. The quake was felt as far away as Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Preliminary reports indicate significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the epicenter area. The historic Mission San Antonio de Padua in Jolon was reportedly heavily damaged, and multiple homes and businesses collapsed or were severely damaged. Emergency responders are currently on the scene and are working to rescue and assist victims. Injuries have also been reported, but the exact number and severity of those injuries are still being assessed.
The quake also caused widespread power outages in the region. Over 1 million people are without power in the Bay Area alone. Utility crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible, but it is expected to take several hours or even days to fully restore service.
